If you don't backup your data, start now

The president of the business in Everett, Carl Jorgensen, said computer backups of its records allow it to continue to operate. Many of the 30 Everett employees are working at the company's office in Bothell.

After years in and around IT organizations I can't stress enough the importance of backups. For every office and every computer. No matter what industry you are in. Think about doing without your PC/Laptop for a week - painful, but you'll get it back. Then think about losing your computer for a week and never, ever getting your old emails, files, etc, back.

Our server data is backed up every night and weekly backups are stored offisite. I year ago I migrated from tape backups to removable encrypted HDs. I connected the portable drives via USB to the server - simple, inexpensive and fast.

But now I don't think it's enough. Losing a days of data, our paper files and our entire office would be too overwhelming. I've decided we need to migrate to an offline backup service. I've been using Carbonite for my laptop backup for several months now. Very cost effective, but I don't like the overhead on my already overloaded system, and I'm not sure that my important files get backed up often enough.

I am going to look into a Mozy corporate subscription for all our PCs and Servers. Time to move to the next level. I'll let you know what I find out.
